Movement

Movement

Motion blur - the apparent streaking of rapidly moving objects in a still image or a sequence of images such as a movie or animation. It results when the image being recorded changes during the recording of a single exposure, either due to rapid movement or long exposure.
Freeze frame - an optical effect or technique in which a single frame of film is reprinted in a continuous series, which when shown gives the effect of a still photograph.

Artist Research
Shin T
Shin T is an ammeter photographer from Nagoya Japan who has done extensive work in long exposure shots that focus on movement. There is not much information on Shin T because he only has a flickr page.

Both of these photos are long exposure shots of traffic. We immediately get a sense of movement and chaos with the photos.

The first photo is a shot down onto a road below him, we get perfectly straight lines going up and down from the lights of cars but there is one line that breaks the the series of straight lines. This is really good at showing movement because in reality this event would have been

Selected and Edited Images

AO3: Record ideas, observations and insights relevant to intentions, reflecting critically on work and progress.
My intention with shooting for movement was to get a series of images that mimicked the style of Shin T. I wanted dark photos with a clear and evident presentation of movement. I looked at Shin T’s light trail photography of moving traffic and attempted my own recreation, I believe that I achieved the style of Shin T and an accurate portrayal of movement.

AO2: Explore and select appropriate resources, media, materials, techniques and processes, reviewing and refining ideas as work develops.
I used my Canon 5D with this shoot and I used manual mode to make sure I had a long exposure time that allowed for a whole car to pass. I used times from 10 to 20 seconds which allowed for different lengths of trails but did not change the photo much in any other way. The aperture was important was I wanted to have a high depth of field to insure that the majority of the photo was in focus.
AO1: Develop ideas through sustained and focused investigations informedby contextual and other sources, demonstrating analytical and criticalunderstanding.
My research into Shin T was highly useful as it gave me inspiration into what
photos I wanted to take. His style of long exposures gave me a good interpretation of photographing movement. The other research into other types of movement photography was also useful as it gave me a larger understanding of movement photography. All though i did not do any other movement styles within my shoots I would look into doing that in the future.

AO4: Present a personal and meaningful response that realises intentionsand, where appropriate, makes connections between visual and otherelements

Over all I believe that my series of photos resembles a strong sense of movement and follows the
style of shin T. They require little editing and only a small amount of cropping to allow for the framing I like.

  1. to get a B - please do a reshoot and this time reduce the f stop to f22? and set the camera to bulb, show evidence of how your images have improved through comparing the images taken... and shoot in different locations.. also update the annotations they are too brief..
